Principles of Good Design

Good design is invisible. When something is well‑designed, you don’t notice the design – you notice the experience. It’s clear, effortless, and feels intuitive. Great design, however, goes further: it evokes emotion, communicates values, and builds trust.

Whether you’re building a product, a website, or a physical space, these core principles will guide you toward more human, effective outcomes.

1. Clarity & Simplicity

The most powerful design is the simplest. Eliminate anything that doesn’t serve the user’s goal. Use plain language, clear labels, and a visual hierarchy that guides the eye naturally. Each element should have a reason to exist.

2. Consistency & Familiarity

People feel safe with patterns they recognise. Use consistent colours, typography, spacing, and interactions across your interface. This builds a mental model that reduces cognitive load and accelerates learning.

  • Colour: Use a limited palette (3‑5 main colours).
  • Typography: Stick to 2‑3 font weights and sizes.
  • Spacing: Maintain a rhythm (e.g., multiples of 8px).
  • Interactions: Buttons and links should behave predictably.

3. Visual Hierarchy

Not everything is equally important. Use size, weight, colour, and position to establish a clear reading order. The most critical action should be the most prominent.

High‑contrast, bold elements that demand attention.

🔵 Secondary

Supporting content that is visible but not dominant.

⚪ Tertiary

Subtle metadata or background context.

Consistent spacing aligns elements and creates order.

4. Accessibility & Inclusivity

Good design works for everyone, regardless of ability. Ensure sufficient colour contrast, use semantic HTML, provide alt text, and support keyboard navigation. Accessible design is not a constraint – it’s a superpower.

5. Feedback & Affordance

Users need to know their actions have been registered. Every click, swipe, or input should produce a visible or audible response. Similarly, the design itself should suggest how an element can be used (affordance) – buttons look clickable, sliders look draggable.

6. Performance & Speed

A beautiful design that loads slowly is a poor experience. Optimise images, minify code, and prioritise above‑the‑fold content. Speed is a feature – every millisecond counts.

Great design is not about decoration; it’s about solving problems with empathy and craft. It respects the user’s time, attention, and capabilities. When you combine clarity, consistency, hierarchy, accessibility, feedback, and performance, you create something that feels effortless – and that is the ultimate goal.
